California’s first millionaire emerged in the 1840s Gold Rush. But he didn’t become rich by striking gold himself. He became rich by selling the tools needed to dig up the gold.
Sam Brennan bought up all the picks, shovels, and pans he could find, then ran through the streets of San Francisco shouting that there was gold in the American River.
He bought pans for 20 cents and resold them for $15 each. He made $36,000 in nine weeks.
In 2025 dollars, he bought pans for $8, sold them for $600, and made over a million.
